March 1 is Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Lenten season.  Lent is a journey towards the cross and then the empty tomb.  First comes the journey.  Next comes the cross. Finally we reach the empty tomb.
As we move through this season we will prepare ourselves for the events of Holy Week, that week of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, the trials, the beatings, the death, and the burial.
We begin our journey with a service of humility on Ash Wednesday.  On this day we are reminded of our mortality when we have the sign of the cross placed on our foreheads with the words, “ashes to ashes, and dust to dust.  From the earth you came, to the earth you will return.”
This is a very meaningful service to begin our journey.  Our choir will be singing.  Along with the ashes we will celebrate the Sacrament of Communion.  There will be the reading of Scriptures and a time for prayer.
To help encourage attendance at this service we are having a potluck supper.  Two of our Teams are bringing main dishes.  You are asked to bring a dish to pass.  The potluck is at 6:00 p.m. and the Worship Service at 7:00 p.m.
After this entry into the season we will continue our journey through Lent reflecting on Scriptures and how they draw us closer to our Redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ.
In addition to our Sunday services you are invited to attend any of the community Lenten breakfasts held on Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m.  They  are done by 7:50 a.m.  Each breakfast will have  a testimony by a member of one of the churches and a message from one of the pastors in town.  This is a great opportunity to share in fellowship with other Christians in our community and to hear a message as we move towards Good    Friday.
During Holy Week we will have another potluck on Maundy Thursday, April 13, at 6:00 p.m.
with a worship service following.  Then on Good Friday there will be a community service.  More details will be coming next month.
Then we will move on to the celebration.

  Blessings and peace,
  Pastor Paul

Recently in our Children’s Sunday school class it was decided to send out some cards for Valentines Day.  Elaine designed some simple cards, gathered all the necessary items to craft them, and then got it all ready to let the kids make them for some of our shut-ins and elderly.  This was done on one of the Sunday’s that the older youth were busy with an activity, so there were only about 9 kids participating in this at the time.  But nine small children can do a great deal when given an opportunity.
Many cards were mailed, and many people received a little bit of extra love around Valentine’s Day this year.
Now the reason that I am writing to you about all of this is because these kids are proof that a little bit of love goes a long way.  We have received many thank-you notes from those that received these cards, and the kids got to see what love in action looks like.  The cards were simple, they were not purchased, but were simply hand-crafted. Each card had a very personal touch, and that makes a difference.  Obviously, the cost was very minimal, but the impact looks like it was immeasurable.  Thank God for the kids and Elaine.
There are a number of Bible verses that tell us to love others, and here are just a few examples.  Luke 6:31 says, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” And 1 John 4:7 says. “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”  The kids really seem to get it.  The kids simply came to Sunday school to learn, and it appears that they also have a great deal to teach us as well, at least about love.
ere are just a few responses from those who received the cards.

Dear Nicholas, Blake, William, Erin, Franky, Aly, Hailey, Ashley and Victoria,
It made me feel very special that you took time and effort to make such a pretty Valentine’s Day card and send it to me.  Thank you for thinking of me.  I also really enjoyed seeing all your smiling faces.  Happy Valentine’s Day to you too.
My card was signed by Blake, and I really liked the decorations you chose.  I really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Thank you for the Valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and all the Sunday school girls and boys.
We all love these kids, and it is pretty obvious that they love us too.  Isn’t that wonderful to know.
