Lectionary Readings for January 21
The 3rd Sunday of Epiphany
Jonah 3: 1 – 5; 10; Psalm 62: 5 – 12;
1 Corinthians 7: 29 – 31; Mark 1: 14 – 20
This week the focus will be on the Old Testament and Psalm reading in the lectionary. In Jonah 3 Jonah proclaim the word of God to the people of Ninevah and they listened and repented. In Psalm 62 it begins by saying, “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock …”
Are you good at waiting in silence? As I write this I had a new time of silence this morning. My son began working the 3rd shift and so he didn’t get home from work until about 7:30. I sat at the kitchen table waiting for him to arrive before I left for work. I took that time to do some praying. I am reminded of the time that my spiritual director, a colleage in ministry gave me a good piece of advice about waiting. He said if you go to make a hospital visit and when you arrive you have to wait outside of the patient’s room, use that time for prayer. Instead of standing there impatiently waiting until you can go into their room to visit and pray, spend the time praying. I have found that advice useful in many circumstances. If I’m driving somewhere and hit every stop light red – use those few moments at the stop light to pray. If I’m waiting for someone to arrive at my office and they are running late – use those moments to pray.
This week we will be looking at ways we can wait in silence in the presence of God and rely on God as our rock and our salvation.

Souper Bowl of Caring Chili Cook Off
Once again our youth and Nurture and Growth team will sponsor a Chili Cook off after worship on Feb. 4th. We need several to make chili for the competition and fun. All money raised goes to support LOCAL hunger programs. Please fill out a chili form from the table in the foyer and get to a Nurture and Growth team member or place on Dorice’s desk. Thanks!
Dinner for Four There is a sign up sheet for Dinner for Four which is sponsored by the Outreach & Fellowship Team. After the end of this month those signed up will be assigned to groups of four or 5 people. Those people will be notified of what group they are in and the groups will arrange a time in February or March to have dinner together. This is a fun way of getting to know people better and enjoy fellowship with other members or friends of our church.
